The Training Officer reported a drop of 23 percent in registrations for courses in September, 1983. There were 123 registrations for the Boating Courses and 94 for other courses. The decrease of 60 percent in the size of the Boating Courses was a great disappointment. The percentage of passes was down also, 74 percent overall of those who wrote the examinations.

MAREP Officer John Wolsey, AP expressed concern at the lack of response from members. Participation in the MAREP Program by Britannia Power Squadron was never more than one or two reports in a year. The Annual Graduation Dinner was held at the Britannia Yacht Club on 17th May. In past years the accommodation for this dinner at the Yacht Club was somewhat cramped with before dinner drinks and dinner served in the same room. For this year the before dinner reception was in the downstairs lounge and the dinner in the spacious room upstairs.

The honoured guests were District Commander Gideon C. Si1verthorne, AP, Commander Ronald Rosser, AP of the Ottawa Power Squadron and Commodore David Brown of the Britannia Yacht Club.

The total membership in the Squadron was now 377, the same as in the previous year. There were 340 full members, 36 lady and one junior associate.

The concept of family Memberships to commence in 1985 was approved at the CPS National Annual General Meeting. As the representative of the Britannia Squadron, Commander Wm. J. Newlands cast his vote in favour of the motion. With Family Membership one member of a family will pay the full amount of dues and the other members one half of normal dues. A Family Member was defined as a person who had passed the Boating Course, is the spouse or dependent child who has attained the age of eighteen years and resides at the same address as the Member paying full dues.

In November the Commander represented the Squadron at the biannual meeting called by Parks Canada at Smith Falls for discussions on the parks system and the needs of boaters along the Rideau Waterway. Parks Canada representatives expressed appreciation for the input from the Power Squadrons.

A formal meeting was held at the Aylmer Marina on 15th November for the formation of another squadron in the National Capital Region. Lieut. Commander R. Bruce Ware represented the Commander of the Britannia Power Squadron at this inaugural meeting. Of the twenty five persons who signed the application for a charter, twenty four were members or past members of the Britannia Squadron. The name chosen for the new squadron was "l'Escadrille de l'Outaouais".

For ten years the Britannia Squadron had been conducting courses in French and had many Francophone members. The Squadron Executive had assisted in several ways in the formation of this Francophone squadron including a grant of $1500.00 towards "start up funds".

Sixty five members and guests enjoyed a wine and cheese party at the Britannia Yacht Club on the evening of 22nd November. District Commander and Mrs. Silverthorne and Commodore and Mrs. David Brown were the guests of the Squadron.

On 20th January the Britannia Power Squadron hosted at the Britannia Yacht Club a meeting of the Rideau District Council. The program commenced with coffee and donuts at 0930 for the arriving delegates. Unfortunately the members from Squadrons along the St. Lawrence River east of Kingston were late arrivals as a result of a severe ice storm. Nevertheless it was a satisfactory meeting. There was a buffet lunch at 1200 and the meeting adjourned in mid-afternoon.

Members of the Britannia Power Squadron assisted the Ottawa Squadron in manning the CPS Information Booth at the Ottawa Sportsman's Show for the five days from 13th through 17th February. People stopping at the booth were told about the accelerated Boating Course commencing on 18th February and the regular course scheduled to commence in September. The names of interested parties were recorded for follow-up telephone calls before the commencement of the courses.

The Winter 1985 Accelerated Boating Course was presented jointly by the Britannia and Ottawa Squadrons. It commenced on 18th February with examinations scheduled for 10th April. Of the fifty-one registrations for the course half of the students heard of this course for the first time when they stopped at the Canadian Power Squadrons Information Booth at the Ottawa Sportsman' Show.

A film night on 28th February at the National Research Council Auditorium on Sussex Street was well received by the 150 members and guests who were present. The guests included the members and students of the Ottawa Power Squadron. The films were "Escape Under Sail - a cruise from Vancouver to the South Pacific in a 41 foot ketch" and "Admirals' Cup, 1983". Coffee and donuts were served during the intermission between the two films.
