The Annual General Meeting was held at the R.A. Centre on the evening of 27th April. The following officers were elected for 1982/1983:
| Commander | James B. Craig, JN |
| Lieut. Commander and Executive Officer |
William J. Newlands, N |
| First Lieut. and Secretary | M. Lynn MacDiarmid, S |
| First Lieut. and Treasurer | Wilfred G. Pilsworth |
| First Lieutenants | Alexander Lawson, S Neil Lowes, AP Evelyn Noonan, AP Frank Schepens |
The Treasurer reported that 1981/82 was another satisfactory year. Bank balances, remained approximately the same over the past three years.
The Training Officer also reported 1981-82 as another successful year. The number of registrations in September was a few less than in the previous year. However the number of students who wrote the examinations was essentially the same and the academic record was equally good.
John Grover, AP was appointed Training Officer for the coming year.
During the next month the Commander appointed Philippe Beaudry AP, Desmond Moyles, AP, Jack Noonan, AP and Claude Willman to positions of Squadron Lieutenant for 1982/83.
The Annual Graduation Dinner was held at the Britannia Yacht Club on 12th May. For this year the seating was restricted to 160 persons. The guests of honour were District Commander C.M. Crewe, AP, Commander Ronald Rosser of the Ottawa Power Squadron, Commodore William Christie of the Britannia Yacht Club, two representatives of the Ottawa Board of Education and Mr. Toby Spry of St. John Ambulance.
The strength of the Squadron was now 343 full members, 41 lady associates and one junior, a total of 385.
The question of practical experience for Boating Class students had been discussed several times by the Squadron Executive during recent years. Such an opportunity was given to seven successful Boating Class students on an afternoon in June. These new graduates plotted and steered courses and took bow and beam bearings under power. Three sailboats of Squadron members participated and, to end the cruise, sail was hoisted and the new members had the experience of steering under sail.
A "Lunar Cruise" was held on the evening of 23rd July. Five yachts departed Britannia Yacht Club at 1800 bound for Aylmer Island. The Commander's yacht anchored near the island and the others, now including a yacht from Aylmer, rafted together. Thirty members and guests enjoyed drinks and dinner on board and an after dark sing-along. The weather was perfect with favourable winds and a spectacular display of northern lights during the return to permanent moorings.
The year 1982 was the sesquicentennial of the Rideau Canal. Numerous celebrations took place along this waterway during the summer. The single event of most interest to members of the Britannia Power Squadron was the CPS Rendezvous at Beveridge Lock 31st July - 2nd August. There were about two hundred members of CPS at this event.
In September there was a small increase in registrations. For the Boating Course the total was 183, of whom 160 were for the course in English and 23 for Cours de Plaisance. French language courses this year included Seamanship and Junior Navigator in addition to the Boating Course and Advanced Piloting.
At the Annual General Meeting of Canadian Power Squadrons in Halifax the annual per member dues payable to CPS Headquarters was increased from $8.00 to $12.00. Several delegates including those from the Britannia Squadron opposed this fifty percent increase but the motion passed by a small number of votes.
The Executive had avoided raising Squadron dues over the past three years in spite of most social events operating at a loss. However it seemed prudent for the future to ask at the next Squadron AGM for an increase of one dollar. If approved, the total dues for a member of the Britannia Squadron would increase by $5.00 for 1984.
A pleasant wine and cheese party was held for members and their guests at the Britannia Yacht Club on the evening of 10th November.
On 28th November the Squadron hosted a luncheon meeting of the Rideau District Executive at the Britannia Yacht Club.
During the second week of December the Entertainment Officer arranged coffee breaks for students and instructors at the Boating Courses in the various schools in Ottawa. Similar breaks were arranged for the students on the courses in Aylmer. This event originated in 1981 and was as popular with the students of 1982 as in the previous year. However there was no alternative to the preparation of these refreshments in the lecture rooms. This activity disrupted lectures to the extent that the Christmas coffee breaks were dropped for the following year.
In recognition that 1983 was the year Canada challenged for the America's Cup, Film Night this winter was a fund raising event for the Canadian challenger. Members and friends from Ottawa Power Squadron were invited to participate. The National Research Council Auditorium on Sussex Drive was standing room only with a capacity crowd of more than three hundred.
There were two films: the Trans Atlantic Single Handers 1980 Ostar featuring Canadian single handers Bob Lush and Mike Birch and the 1980 America's Cup film "Freedom".
During the intermission bags were passed among the audience for a collection for the support of Canada I. A total of $584.67 was collected. For those who wished to donate and get receipts for income tax purposes, forms were handed out with the address of the Canadian Yachting Association Canada I Subscription Office.
In February the Canadian Yachting Association held their Annual Meeting in Victoria, B.C. Jack Noonan, AP of the Britannia Power Squadron was the official representative of Canadian Power Squadrons at this meeting.
