This year the Annual General Meeting of the Squadron was held a couple of weeks before the Graduation Dinner. The location was the R.A. Centre and the date was 28th April. The following officers were elected for the 1981/1982 season :

John Clay, Desmond Moyles, AP, Jack Noonan, AP, and Ronald Rioux, AP were appointed Squadron Lieutenants for 1981/1982.

The Treasurer reported as usual a strong financial position.

The Training Officer reported another successful year. Of the 289 registrations in September 147 wrote and 132 passed the examinations. Of those who passed their examinations there were sixty from the Boating Course and seventeen from Le Cours de Plaisance, pass rates of 94 and 85 percent.

The Annual Graduation Dinner was held at the Britannia Yacht Club on 13th May. Two hundred members, students and guests enjoyed the dinner and graduation ceremonies. There was no dance this year.

The honoured guests were the District Commander, the Commander of the Ottawa Power Squadron, the Commodore of the Britannia Yacht Club, two members from the Ottawa Board of Education and Mr. Toby Spry from St John Ambulance who conducted a one day first aid course for the Squadron during the winter Courses.

The ceremonies included for the first time a bilingual pledging ceremony. Twenty of the new members joining the Squadron were French speaking. Britannia is the only Squadron in the Rideau District to offer courses in both English and French. Both the Boating Course and Advanced Piloting were offered in the French language during 1980/1981.

During the winter the Executive purchased brass plaques to honour all the Past Commanders of the Squadron. These attractive plaques, about eighteen by twenty four centimetres, had a coloured CPS flag at the top and were engraved with the name and dates of the recipient. They were presented to the several Past Commanders who were present at the annual dinner. Other past commanders received their plaques at a later date.

With the new members the strength of the Squadron became 329 full members, 42 lady associates and one junior, for a total membership of 372.

1st Lt. Rinaldo Pappone resigned from the bridge during August. Lucie Norbert, AP offered to take over his duties of PRO for the balance of the year and was appointed a Squadron Lieutenant.

A joint meeting of the senior officers of the Britannia and Ottawa Squadrons was held on the 19th August to agree on a uniform schedule of tuition fees for the courses of the coming training season. In earlier years there had been some differences but in general the Ottawa Power Squadron had been a price leader followed by Britannia.

In September there were 141 registrations for the Boating Courses and 109 for the other courses. This was a small decrease from the previous year. The only disappointment was a drop from 36 to 20 in the registrations for the French language Boating Course.

The 1981 Annual Conference of Canadian Power Squadrons was held in Ottawa during the first four days of October. The official host was Rideau District and most of the work of organization during the preceding two years fell on members of the Ottawa and Britannia Squadrons. District Lieut. Commander Gideon C. Silverthorn was chairman of the committee that organized and managed the convention. The location was the Holiday Inn at Kent and Queen Streets.

The committee did a superb job on the arrangements for this conference of six hundred delegates. The event was financed by donations from some squadrons, a grant from National Headquarters and the sale of souvenirs such as ditty bags and cocktail serviettes. Not only were the officers of the National Executive loud in their praise of the arrangements but delighted also that the entire operation came within budget.

For the Britannia Squadron one of the highlights at the National Convention was the presentation to Lt/C Bruce Pettitt, our Training Officer, of the Beldon W. Fox Trophy. This trophy is awarded annually to the most proficient squadron in organizing and teaching advanced courses.

There was no Entertainment Officer on the Bridge until October of this year. Evelyn Noonan agreed to fill this position and was appointed a Squadron Lieutenant.

The first event organized by the new Entertainment Officer was a wine and cheese party at the Britannia Yacht Club for the evening of 19th November. This was a delightful affair enjoyed by ninety members and students.

The Squadron hosted a one day meeting of the Rideau District Council at the Britannia Yacht Club on 6th December. This was another successful meeting.

For the 16th and 17th December the Squadron organized coffee breaks for the instructors and students on the several Britannia Squadron courses in Ottawa. For the courses in Aylmer the choice of the instructors and students was a "wine break" in place of the coffee breaks for the students in Ottawa.

In the year 1972 the lady associates were given the choice of becoming full members of Canadian Power Squadrons or retaining their of lady associate. In the autumn of 1981 it was decided at the National Conference that there would be no new lady associates. The present lady associates in good standing would be permitted to retain their associate reenbership if they wished to do so.

It was evident last year that a Film Night was a popular event. For the winter social program the date and place of the Film Night were 4th February at the N.R.C. Auditorium on Sussex Street. Again this year the members and students of the Ottawa Power Squadron were the guests of the Britannia Squadron.

Before the intermission and coffee break there were two Canadian Coast Guard educational films and a talk by Mr. Douglas Lang of Department of Transport on the new Canadian Buoyage System. After the intermission there was a one hour film on the 1979 Admiral's Cup including the Fastnet race.

This month Howard Holliday resigned his position of auditor. John Cutler agreed to serve as auditor for the balance of 1981/82.

On 23rd February at the Britannia Yacht Club there was a Parks Canada Night organized jointly by Parks Canada and the Britannia Power Squadron. At this event the representatives of Parks Canada presented their plans for improvements to the Rideau Waterway.

Bruce Kirby, the designer of the twelve metre Canada I, was guest speaker at a Britannia Yacht Club dinner on 25th March. Members of Britannia Power Squadron were invited to join with the Yacht Club for this event.

At the Britannia Yacht Club on 15th April Mr.Tony Ronza of the Royal Hamilton Yacht Club presented a slide show and a film on the Canada Cup and his 1982 victory in this race to members of the Britannia Yacht Club and the Britannia Power Squadron.
