The Annual Graduation Dinner and Dance was held at the R.A. Centre on 28th April. The guests of honour were District Commander John D. Richards, JN, District Lieutenant Daryl Collard, N, Commodore A. Vandenbelt of the Britannia Yacht Club, Mr. Donald Martin of the Britannia Yacht Club and Mr. Joseph Koscher of the Ottawa Board of Education.

The loss on the Graduation Dinner and Dance was more than $700.00. This event is not expected to break even but the deficit was larger than expected by the Executive. The Ottawa Power Squadron also was not happy with the loss on its Graduation Dinner. This lead to some discussion on combining these events to achieve some economy of scale. Eventually both squadrons decided to continue with their own arrangements for 1979.

The Annual General Meeting was held on the 1st May at the R.A. Centre. The following officers were elected for 1978/1979 :

Commander Edgar Wiggs, JN
Lieut. Commander
and Executive Officer
Jack Buchanan, S
First Lieut. and Secretary Thomas Spaulding, AP
First Lieut. and Treasurer William E. Chabot
First Lieutenant Kenneth Findlay, AP
First Lieutenant William E. Hellqvist, S
First Lieutenant Desmond Moyles, AP
First Lieutenant John Murray, AP
Auditor John Reeves, AP

The Treasurer reported a satisfactory year in 1977/78.

The Training Officer reported 1977/78 another successful year. Of the one hundred and ten who wrote the Boating Course Examination there were only ten failures. Complete results for the advanced and elective courses were not available for the Annual General Meeting.

Dianne Henderson was appointed Lieutenant Commander and Training Officer for the coming year. Clara Reedyk was appointed Assistant Training Officer.

The strength of the Squadron was now 287 full members, 57 lady associates and six juniors, a total membership of 350. This was a net decrease of 18 full members and 15 lady associates since the previous year.

The Commander appointed Glynis L. Burnett, James D. Fathers, William J. Deschenes and Herbert Law, AP to the rank of Squadron Lieutenant.

Before the end of May there were three resignations of officers. 1st Lt. and Secretary Thomas Spaulding resigned due to the pressure of business affairs. 1st.Lt. William Hellqvist resigned as a result of a change in employment responsibilities. The third resignation was from Lt. Marguerite Spaulding.

There were now two vacancies for the rank of First Lieutenant. The Commander appointed Squadron Lieutenants James Fathers and Herbert Law, AP, to fill the vacancies.

In June there was a resignation from 1st Lt. and Treasurer William Chabot due to his transfer to Quebec City. The commander asked First Lieutenant John Murray to fill this position until a permanent Treasurer could be appointed. Next month Glynis L. Burnett was appointed to the position of First Lieutenant and Treasurer.

In September the total registrations for courses was 323. Of these 184 were for the Boating Course, 166 English and 18 in the French language.

The Ottawa Power Squadron was assisting with the formation of a new squadron at Smith Falls. For the first Smith Falls Boating Coarse the instructors were provided by both the Ottawa and Britannia Squadrons.

The last social event for 1978 was a film night on 15th December at Camsell Hall, Department of Energy, Mines and Resources. This event was organized by the Britannia Squadron for all members and students of both the Ottawa and Britannia Squadrons. The films were The Canal Systems of Ontario, The St. Lawrence River and Sailing in Newfoundland. Coffee and donuts were served at the conclusion of the films.

In February, for the first time since approval of the design in 1975, the Squadron Pennant was available for sale to members. The price was $3.50

During March the Executive arranged for colour photocopies to be made of the Squadron Warrant. A copy was sent to each of the seventeen Charter Members. This gesture was appreciated very much by the recipients.

During the last couple of years the training officers and instructors in Rideau District were disappointed at the length of time, approximately five years, required for the revision of a course. To help expedite this work the Britannia Squadron donated $1000.00 to the CPS Foundation, the money to be applied towards a rapid update of courses. However the Foundation could not accept a gift restricted to one specific use. Furthermore it is only the interest from investments of the Foundation that can be used for CPS projects. In view of this situation the Squadron agreed to remove their condition on the donation.

The Graduation Dinner and Dance was held at the R.A. Centre on 21st April. The one hundred and sixty members and guests agreed that it was a great success, good food and a good dance band. With the good attendance the net cost to the Squadron was less than $300.00

The distinguished guests at the Annual Dinner were District Commander John Richards, JN, Commander G.C. Silverthorn, AP, of the Ottawa Power Squadron, and Mr. Joseph Koshe and Mr. J.L. Soden of the Ottawa Board of Education.
