The Commander appointed Lieut. Commander Daryl Collard, N, who transferred recently to Britannia from the Victoria Power Squadron, to be the Training Officer for 1976/1977.
The Treasurer reported a substantial increase in net worth. This was the result of the increased enrollment in training programs and to no expensive social activities during the year.
The Training Officer at the AGM reported the largest number of students since the formation of the Squadron. In the Boating Course 106 students passed the examination in English and 13 in the French language; this is 76 and 81 percent respectively of those who wrote the examination. A total of forty students passed the advanced and elective courses.
The Squadron Lieutenants appointed by the Commander for 1976/1977 were Jack Buchanan, S, John Grover, David Plaunt, AP, Lloyd Thayer, JN and Doris Viney, AP. 1st Lt. Grover resigned during the month of June and Herbert Law was appointed to replace him.
There was a Rafting Party on the 25th June. Yachts departed from the Britannia Yacht Club and from the Lac Deschenes Marina at 1800 for an up-river anchorage. Unfortunately the weather deteriorated rapidly. Some of the boats anchored In the lee of Aylmer Island and others in more open water near the Britannia Yacht Club. Nevertheless the sixty six members who participated enjoyed themselves thoroughly.
The strength of the Squadron in July, 1976 was a total of 329 members consisting of 260 full members, 64 lady associates and 5 junior associates.
The registrations in September for the Boating course were three less than the previous year while there was a large increase in registrations for advanced and elective courses. The total number of registrations was 331.
The question arose during the year of a uniform for lady members. The Squadron Commander became involved in these discussions at both the District and the National levels. The design she submitted was approved by National Headquarters as the official uniform for lady members.
By 1976 there were more than 3500 Lady Associates in Canadian Power Squadrons. These associates did not pay fees and the costs of record keeping had become a significant expense. Therefore in January, 1977 the Governing Board instituted a $3.00 annual administrative charge on each Lady Associate to be paid directly to C.P.S. Headquarters.
There were no activities during the autumn except for a very active training program but a number were organized during the winter and spring period.
On the 21st January at Camsell Hall on Booth Street the Canadian Hydrographic Service made a formal presentation on their chart making and publishing activities for members and students of the Britannia and Ottawa Power Squadrons. After the lecture there was an informal question and answer period. All those present enjoyed an interesting and educational evening. The evening activities ended with coffee and donuts provided by the Britannia Power Squadron.
The first social event of the year was a Ski Night at the Cederwood Golf Course on 5th February. For the small group of members and friends who participated the evening was a success.
Britannia and Ottawa Squadrons together organized and financed an information booth at the Ottawa Sportman's Show in the Ottawa Civic Centre from 23rd to 27th February. Seven members from each Squadron cooperated in manning the booth.
The Ottawa Power Squadron hosted a presentation in Ottawa by Department of Transport on V.H.F. Marine Radio. It was a useful evening for members of the two Ottawa Squadrons who were interested in V.H.F. Light refreshments were served at the end of the evening.
The Annual Graduation Dinner and Dance was held at the Civil Service R.A. Centre on 29th April. The guests of honour were Lieut. Commander Jack Jeswiett, the District Training Officer representing the District Commander, Vice Commodore Gordon Glass of the Britannia Yacht Club and Mr. Joseph Koscher of the Ottawa, Board of Education. There was no representative of the Ottawa Power Squadron since they were holding their Annual Dinner on the same evening.
