The Treasurer reported that it had been a financially poor year. He stated that revenues were only $3.69 more than expenses. This compared unfavourably with the reasonable profit of the preceding two years. One of the financial problems was the increasing costs of distribution of notices, newsletters, etc. Other squadrons of Rideau District were having the same problem.
Examination results for the 1972/1973 courses were not available for the AGM except for the Boating Course. Of the fifty-seven who wrote the examination forty three were successful. This is a pass rate of seventy five percent, less than expected for this course.
The Squadron Lieutenants appointed by the Commander were Mary Ann Barrett, S, Ellen Devine, S, William Gard, N and David McGarry, AP.
On Sunday, 8th April, the Britannia and Ottawa Squadrons co hosted a one day meeting of the Rideau District Council at the new Holiday Inn, corner of Kent and Queen Streets. It was a good meeting and the delegates were pleased with the arrangements made by the hosts.
The Graduation Dinner was held at the Britannia Yacht Club on the evening of 25th April. One hundred and thirty three members and guests were present. The guests of honour were District Commander T.L. Stubbs, JN, of Rideau District, Commander Stan Dix, S, of Ottawa Power Squadron and Commodore W.S. Blandy of Britannia Yacht Club.
With the new members from the Boating Course the strength of the Squadron was now 157 full members and 56 lady and 5 junior associates. This was a decrease of one full member and an increase of nine lady associates and three juniors.
During the month of May both Britannia Yacht Club and Britannia Power Squadron made representations to the Ministry of Transport on the deplorable condition of the aids to navigation on Lac Deschenes. As a result of this action the existing aids were refubished and two new aids were placed during the month of June.
Commander Booker and Past Commander Huddleston of the Britannia Squadron and Commander Dix of the Ottawa Power Squadron were invited to appear on Ottawa and Skyline Cablevision to tell the story of Canadian Power Squadrons. Their presentation was good publicity for the two local squadrons.
A Rafting Party was held on Friday, 22nd June. The yachts with their crews, guests and other members without boats departed the Britannia Yacht Club at 1900. It was a pleasant evening and an enjoyable social event.
The Summer Rendezvous with corn roast planned for later in the season was cancelled. There was a lack of interest among Squadron members due to the many other boating events on Lac Deschenes.
In September of this year there was a total of 165 registrations for the courses offered by the Squadron. This was an increase of ten percent over the preceding year. The registrations were 107 for the Boating Course, 23 for Seamanship, 16 for Advanced Piloting, 11 for Junior Navigator, two for Navigator, five for Sailing and one for Weather.
Lieutenant Barrett, the Treasurer of the Squadron, resigned in October for personal and business reasons. Squadron Lieutenant Gard was appointed First Lieutenant and Treasurer and accepted this appointment in addition to his duties as Inventory Control Officer.
During the winter of 1973 some employees of the City of Vanier lost their lives in a boating accident during ice cutting operations. The Squadron Comander wrote to the mayors of both Vanier and Ottawa suggesting that their employees, using boats should take the CPS Boating Course. The result was that the two cities organized a short course for their employees with instructors from the Federal Government, Canadian Red Cross and the Britannia Power Squadron. The two municipalities felt that this was a very successful course. Past Commander Arthur N. Huddleston was the instructor from the Britannia Power Squadron.
Both Britannia and Ottawa Power Squadrons had poor attendance at social activities during 1973 with the exception of the Graduation Dinners. In consequence, at the Executive Meeting in January it was decided not to plan socia1 events for the year 1974 but to concentrate on the training program.
