The Annual General Meeting was held on the evening of 22nd April at the Britannia Yacht Club. To attract more than the usual small number of members to the Annual General Meeting it was announced that a complementary cold buffet and free beer would be served immediately after the meeting.

The following officers were elected for 1970/71:

Commander Paul C.M. LaDelpha, AP
Lieut. Commander
and Executive Officer
N. Huddleston, AP
First Lieut. and Secretary Allan J. Clark, AP
First Lieut. and Treasurer Howard F. Holliday, S
First Lieut Peter J. Campbell, S
First Lieut Ray J. Wellman
Auditor James D. McMillan
Lieut. Commander Ralph C. Smith was appointed
Training Officer for 1970/71.

During the 1969/70 training period, of the fifty one students who registered for the Piloting Course thirty five wrote the examination and thirty three passed. On the advanced and elective courses there were sixty six registrations, fifty three wrote examinations and fifty one passed. The high percentage of passes for those who wrote the examinations indicated a continuing high standard of instruction. Only ten percent of the Squadrons in the Rideau District achieved this level of success in examinations.

Shortly after the Annual General Meeting the Commander appointed Herbert E. Barrett, S, David W.B. Fair, S, Robert C. Kennedy, AP, David A. Plaunt, AP, Peter Sawatzky, AP, George Schultz, AP, and George, Schurman, AP to the rank of Squadron Lieutenant.

The Commander has the power to appoint Squadron Lieutenants who hold their rank until the next Annual General Meeting. Along with the elected First Lieutenants these officers are assigned one or more areas of responsibility including Assistant Training Officer, Historian, MAREP (introduced in 1972), Membership Records, Public Relations, Regalia, Supply and ADC to the Commander.

The Annual Dinner was held at the Britannia Yacht Club on 6th May. The guests of honour were District Commander C.F. Dumaresq, AP and Commodore John Killick of the Britannia Yacht Club. D/C Dumaresq represented the Chief Commander who was unable to attend.

There were now one hundred and twenty two full members in the squadron and approximately thirty five lady associates.

Another successful Adult Basic Sailing Course was conducted commencing the last week of May.

Lieutenant Peter J. Campbell resigned during June because he was transferred to Vancouver by the Department of Transport. Herbert C. Barrett was appointed First Lieutenant to replace him.

The Annual Rendezevous was held at Baskin's Bay on Saturday, 25th July. The program commenced with registration at 1300 hours. Then there were various games of fun and skill. From 1700 to 1800 there was a reception on board the Commander's yacht. After a dinner break from 1800 to 2100 it was all ashore for a campfire and sing along on the property owned by the Britannia Yacht Club.

It was intended that on the afternoon of the Rendezvous the first competition for the Squadron Seamanship Trophy would be held. This trophy was donated by Commander LaDelpha for annual competition. The competition would be first an inspection of vessels for "Shipshape and Bristol Fashion". This would be followed by tests for proficiency in boat handling, marlinspike seamanship and line tossing. Unfortunately the other sporting events took more time than anticipated and the competition for the new trophy had to be postponed until later in the season.

The Rideau District Annual Conference was held at the Chateau Laurier Hotel on Saturday and Sunday, 12th and 13th September, with a reception for delegates on the preceding Friday evening. This was the first attempt at a two day District Conference over a weekend. Commander LaDelpha was in charge of arrangements. Attendance at the conference was disappointing with only seventy delegates and guests at the dinner on Saturday evening when a minimum of one hundred was expected. Consequently revenues did not cover expenses.

This poor attendance was the result of insufficient lead time for publicity. The conference itself was a success and the decision was taken to repeat the format next year. Commander LaDelpha was asked to again make arrangements for a two day conference in Ottawa.

CTV Television made a short film on the Britannia Power Squadron. There were scenes of the yacht harbour at Britannia Club and a good interview with Commander LaDelpha.

In spite of the smaller than expected attendance at the Caribbean Cruise Dance in last year, there was considerable enthusiasm for this party to become an annual event. This spring the Caribbean Cruise Dance was held at the R.A. Centre on Friday, 12th February. The party followed the established format of get acquainted drinks at 2030, dancing to a Calypso band and buffet at midnight. This was a successful event with more than one hundred members and guests. Within weeks the Executive were making plans for another Calypso Dance in February, 1972.
